It was because of Mukundan's sharp gaze working as the Cultural Attaché at the French embassy that he was able to capture the events Delhi suffered from after independence, transforming the city into a vibrant character with a heart beating to its rhythms. Dasappan, the streetside barber, has his livelihood upturned by government goons, while Sahadevan himself loses his business in a communal-driven demolition drive. On the other hand, Sahadevan’s journalist friend is crippled in a lockup. Then his son is forcibly sterilized in Sanjay Gandhi’s infamous population control campaign. Devi, his wife, is granted a small job in a government office by the union but struggles to make ends meet. After a tense night, he confirms the news from the paper, disturbing him enough to die of a heart attack.
